Baker's Cysts

Baker’s cysts are found in the back of the knee and are technically a specific type of bursitis: bursitis of the popliteal bursa. This bursa is directly connected to the knee joint and develops into a cyst when there is injury and inflammation of the knee joint such as arthritis and meniscus injuries. Injury and inflammation in the knee joint stimulates an increase in production of synovial fluid as the body’s way to protect and immobilize the joint.

When Baker’s cysts become large, they limit movement and cause symptoms of stiffness, fullness, and pain. Laser therapy reduces the size of the Baker’s cyst and treats the underlying cause of this bursitis such as ligament injury, meniscus tear, and arthritis, acting to improve tissue healing and integrity, increase mobility, and reduce pain.
