ORTHOTICS

Hallux Rigidus

This diagnosis describes the significant lack of function in the big toe, specifically its inability to flex and extend. When the big toe is unable to bend fully it causes pain in the joints and alters biomechanics of the foot up through the pelvis to offload the toe. The underlying cause of this condition is osteoarthritis which leads to a loss of joint space, reduced ligament flexibility, and stiffness in the tendons, and subsequently a loss of function.

Hallux rigidus can be treated with manual therapies, rehabilitative homework, and laser therapy to improve flexibility, tissue health, and reduce pain. Nutritional support may also be recommended to reduce inflammation and promote cartilage and ligament health. In many cases, these therapies can provide symptom relief and functional improvement. In the more challenging cases custom orthotics can be utilized to reduce strain on the big toe and balance movement patterns in the lower extremities.
