Plantar Fasciitis

The plantar fascia is a thick band of connective tissue located at the bottom of the foot, playing a key role in arch support, shock absorption, and force transmission throughout the lower limb. When overstretched or irritated, the plantar fascia can lead to the characteristic foot and heel pain associated with plantar fasciitis. This condition can occur in individuals with both highly flexible or rigid feet. Contributing factors include imbalances in lower extremity mechanics and hormonal changes, such as those experienced during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, elevated hormone levels, increased fluid retention, and shifting weight distribution place additional strain on the feet, often causing the arches to collapse. Due to the rapid bodily changes and hormonal influences, complete resolution of plantar fasciitis during pregnancy is rare; however, symptom intensity can often be reduced, improving comfort and mobility.

Effective treatment for plantar fasciitis involves addressing lower body imbalances, including those in the pelvis, as these can lead to asymmetric strain on the feet. Chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapies such as Active Release Techniques®, and targeted rehabilitative exercises are commonly used to promote healing. In more persistent cases, low-level laser therapy can be highly effective, aiding in the resolution of inflammation and promoting tissue remodeling. However, this treatment is not suitable for pregnant individuals. Additionally, supportive footwear and custom orthotics may be necessary to improve foot mechanics and provide the structural support required for the plantar fascia to heal.
