Breastfeeding Difficulties

Nursing requires tongue and lip coordination, strength, and freedom of movement in the neck and jaw. The entire process can become derailed if there is excessive strain in the neck, leading to inefficient feeding, fatigue before a full tummy, crying, or a painful latch. The effect of neck tension on feeding can be experienced by a demonstration: look over one shoulder, tilt your head up, then swallow. You can feel it becomes very effortful.

An assessment for an infant with such challenges examines the entire spine as asymmetry in the lower body can put tension in the neck; the jaw, mouth, and tongue are also evaluated. Treatment includes adjustments to the spine, soft tissue release and craniosacral therapy. Improvements in breastfeeding are typically experienced within the first visit and optimized within four treatments.
