Biceps Tendonitis

Biceps tendonitis is most commonly a repetitive stress injury, though in fewer instances it can result from a direct trauma to the tendon itself. Biceps tendonitis presents as pain at the front of the shoulder with weakness with overhead movements and while lifting; it frequently occurs in conjunction with shoulder impingement and therefore a thorough examination to identify all dysfunctional movement patterns and myofascial imbalances is critical to the progression and healing of biceps tendonitis.

When there is inflammation of the tendon itself, Active Release Techniques® serves to break down the scar tissue in the muscle belly of the biceps to remove strain from the tendon and allow circulation to enter and move through the inflammatory phase of healing. ART® can also be employed to address the muscle imbalances that predispose the biceps to being under excessive strain. Once inflammation of the tendon subsides the tendon texture and tone can be examined: where there is scarring in the tendon, Active Release Techniques® is utilized to break those adhesions apart and facilitate healing of the tendon with biomechanical integrity.
