Bunions

Bunions are visualized easily, as they are bony bumps that form over time on the inside of the foot at the joint between the foot and the first toe: the first metatarsophalangeal joint. As bunions progress, the ligaments and bursa of the joint can become inflamed, leading to redness, swelling, and increased pain. Osteoarthritis often develops in the affected joints, further contributing to pain and restricted movement.

Bunions form from instability at the first metatarsophalangeal joint which is how the toe starts to deviate towards the outside of the foot. Instability in this case has a root cause in overpronation and poor control of pronation of the foot. Orthotics can benefit in all stages of bunion formation and severity by balancing foot mechanics, controlling pronation, and limiting stress on the great toe. When used early, orthotics can prevent worsening of this condition and can prevent bunions in individuals at risk.
