Hammertoes

Hammertoes refer to the misalignment of the toe joints, causing the toe to adopt a claw-like shape. In this condition, the tip of the toe points downward while the middle joint is permanently bent upward. For some, this misalignment may remain stable and the foot retains flexibility, but in other cases the condition progresses, leading to rigidity, pain, numbness, swelling, and the formation of corns or calluses. As hammertoes develop, there is often concurrent misalignment of the metatarsals, creating abnormal strain that often leads to metatarsalgia and can even contribute to the formation of neuromas.

The underlying causes of hammertoes can generally be traced to one of two extremes: overpronation with a collapsing arch, or an extremely high arch. Poorly fitting shoes, especially those with a narrow toe box and inadequate arch support, are also common contributing factors. Custom orthotic therapy can be highly beneficial in treating hammertoes as it addresses the root cause of the misalignment in your specific case. Orthotics help to redistribute pressure, improve foot mechanics, and alleviate pain and other symptoms associated with the condition.
