Iliotibial Band Syndrome

Iliotibial (IT) Band Syndrome is a common issue among runners and athletes in sports like basketball and soccer. It typically presents as lateral knee pain caused by excessive tightness in the iliotibial band (IT band). The IT band is a thick band of fascia that runs along the outer thigh, extending from the hip to the shin. It is continuous with the outer part of the quadriceps muscle, and its tension is regulated by key muscles, including the tensor fascia lata (TFL) and gluteus maximus, which help control internal rotation at both the hip and knee.

Internal rotation at the knee and hip often begins with pronation of the foot. When overpronation or poor control of pronation occurs, it can contribute to increased tension in the IT band, leading to the development of IT band syndrome. This is where orthotic therapy can play a crucial role in addressing the root cause: by supporting proper foot alignment and controlling excessive pronation, orthotics can help facilitate a faster recovery and prevent recurrence of symptoms. When combined with other treatments, such as adjustments, myofascial release, and rehabilitative exercises, orthotics can be a key component in resolving IT band syndrome, allowing athletes to return to their activities expediently and without pain.
