Piriformis syndrome

Piriformis syndrome is a common injury, particularly during pregnancy. It is a diagnosis typically grouped under the generic term ‘sciatica’ as the symptoms involve tightness and pain in the buttocks, often with radiating pain down the back of the thigh. The sciatic nerve can get involved because as it starts to traverse down the back of the thigh, it exits the gluteal region just below the piriformis muscle. Therefore, when the piriformis muscle becomes very tight, the sciatic nerve can become compressed.

Because there are many other conditions that can have similar symptoms as piriformis syndrome and there can be more than one condition contributing to symptoms, a thorough history and examination are key to create a targeted and effective treatment plan. Treatment plans often include adjustments, soft-tissue release, and exercises and stretches for homecare support.
