Rib Pain

Upon entry into the third trimester lower rib pain is commonly experienced. This can be felt close to the spine where the ribs articulate with the spine right around the 8th and 9th thoracic vertebrae which happens to be where the diaphragm attaches and where the bra line sits. It can also be felt at the front where the ribs connect with the sternum, also referred to as the breastbone.

This pain can be an ache, sharp with movement or cough, and can be felt with deeper breaths. When symptomatic these lower ribs tend to be fixated near the spine and inflamed at the front attachment. Because the ribs connect to the breastbone by way of cartilage, inflammation in this area is called costochondritis. Chiropractic care can help resolve these pains through adjustments to reduce tension through the spine and rib attachments, paired with myofascial release to optimize alignment in the body.
